NEWS ... from the office of Dr. Mairead O'Reilly and AssociatesLight the Night 2008 Our office participated last year in the Light the Night 2008 Walk to raise money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. We were there to support our friend and colleague, who is now a ten year survivor of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. For more information, see: www.leukemia-lymphoma.org 2nd ANNUAL JLA VOLUNTEERS ON THE RUN 5KAgain last year, we sponsored the Junior League of Annapolis Volunteers on the Run Annual 5K run/walk at Quiet Waters Park in Annapolis. Proceeds benefited JLA programs including Children’s Literacy, Juvenile Justice, Friends of Foster Care and It’s Elementary. For more information, go to their website: http://www.jlannapolis.org/. In other news: Last fall, as in the past 7 years, in an effort to promote a safe and healthy Halloween for children, at the start of November our office paid for the candy that young trick-or-treaters collected at Halloween.
For all candy brought to our office, Dr. O’Reilly and Dr. Rejman paid a total of $2.00 per pound, with the trick or treater receiving $1.00 per pound, and we matched that $1.00 in a donation to The Annapolis Wellness House. We are proud to donate to this charity, which provides a safe haven in Annapolis where cancer patients and their families can meet to gather information and complete the healing process. Specifically, the home is open during business hours to cancer patients who are undergoing treatment in Anne Arundel County and to their immediate family members whose lives are being affected by the cancer illness. The home will provide free day care and a home environment for the rest and relaxation for these families, as well as overnight accommodations to those who need them. For Halloween 2008, we donated the candy we collected to our overseas troops. Dr. O'Reilly and two staff members -- Katie DiNenna and Pamela Shipley -- participated in the Avon Breast Cancer Walk this past May in Washington. The walk was May 3-4 and covered 39 miles. As explained on the Avon Walk website, "everyone has a personal reason for taking part in the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer. It may be a sister, mother, best friend, or possibly even yourself. But for one weekend, whether you walk or volunteer, we’ll all be reaching for the same goal—finding a cure for breast cancer." For further information about the Walk, click here for the Avon Walk website. Finally, we'd like to share a poem from one of our patients ... pull up a chair and have a read!
